Fàilte (Welcome)!

News from Celtic WebRadio (as of 2006-11-01):

  • I'm adding podcasts to the material covered by this website. They're basically the new form of web radio. They'll appear slowly, as I have a chance to write them up.
  • I'm starting (again) a serious effort to bring the site back up to date. Thanks to you all for the nice notes, and even for the occasional complaints regarding my laziness. Both are helpful.
  • There are still a number of dead links on the site. I'll be working on removing them over the next few days or weeks, and adding new programs.
  • I've restarted my RSS feed, this time with an associated blog (see below). This is a great way to receive news items automatically from your personalized list of sources, and for those of you who use an RSS reader (such as FeedDemon), it should be a convenient way to learn about new Celtic WebRadio sites as they're added here.

Continuous Celtic Music Broadcasts

Site Comments
Acoustic Cafe Radio programs of specific groups. Celtic-related programs in the archive include: Alexi Murdoch, Mary Black, Maura O'Connell
*Celtic Grove This is a 24/7 Celtic music station, with some some commentary, interviews, etc. like a "regular" radio station.
*LiveIreland.com This site has 3 streams of Irish music available continuously. Two of the streams appear to be live. One is traditional, one a mix, one modern.
Live365.com This is a collection of webradio stations, all using technology provided by Live365. These stations use a special Live365 player, which can be installed automatically when you're at the site of any of the stations. Some of the stations are personal stations provided by individuals, while others are institutional. Quality varies, but some are quite good. Do a search for "Celtic" and you'll find quite a few stations (76 as this is being written). Can be firewall issues, if you're listening at work.Of particular quality and interest are these:
Station Description
Celtic Melt Pleasant, rather mellow "Irish and Irish-inspired music"
*RenRadio Celtic and Renaissance Festival Music
*Music Sojourn. This site has 12 music categories, two of which have contemporary Celtic content. The "Celtic Currents" category has 12 tracks totaling 10+ hours. The "Celtic Rock and Reel" category has 5 tracks totaling 5+ hours. Both include links for artist, album information, and album purchase. There is some advertising on the audio track.
*Radio Ceol Constant Irish music track, and plans for live session recordings, artist interviews, guest shows, etc. Uses Apple Quicktime (download is fairly automatic).
*Radio Telefís Éireann This Irish radio station keeps the latest versions of its weekly Irish music programs "Ceili House"  and "The Late Session" available for listening. Click on "Audio Downloads", select program and click on "Real".
Scottish Internet Radio*
This is a totally revamped WebRadio site, with several interesting program series, each program typically 30-40 minutes long, and all available continuously from archive.
Program Description
Ceòl, Cainnt 's Craic (Music, Chat and Crack) with Brian O hEadhra  Pleasant music-and-interview show broadcast in Scots Gaelic. The music is a mix of modern Celtic folk, some traditional Gaelic folk, and other world music.
The Kitchen Ceilidh (Ceilidh às a Chidsin) with Fiona Mackenzie  Nice mix of instrumental and traditional Scots Gaelic songs, with bilingual announcements and occasional beginner lessons in Gaelic.
*SHOUTcast Celtic SHOUTcast provides a variety of "radio stations", many run by individuals as a public service. The link at left is to the Celtic list. Some specific stations worth a listen are: Celtic Grove 56K, Celtic Grove 24K, and Toby's.
*Wales Radio International Archives of "Celtic Notes" and "Sounds Celtic", both of which have some Celtic music content. Only occasional programs are entirely about music, however.
NOTE* Some of the scheduled programs listed below also have associated archives of past programs that can be accessed at any time. I've tried to mark these with a red asterisk (*) in the "Site" column.

Scheduled Celtic Music Programs

These programs are a great opportunity to listen to Celtic music from all over the world, often with comments, interviews, etc. Please be aware that I have a lot of trouble with the times. Sources of difficulty are: (1) stations that stream their programs world-wide, but (incredibly, in my opinion) announce their schedule in local time with no information about how it relates to UTC/GMT; (2) U.S. daylight savings time. If you really want to hear a program, you're well advised to check the website of the station/program, and make your own correction. I'd be grateful to have errors pointed out, though, so this list can be kept as accurate as possible.

Program Comments
*The Celtic World. One-hour TV programs from DenTV.com. Programs deal with a variety of Celtic content, including music, history, and travel. *Celtic Folk. Archive of 8 broadcasts of programs about Celtic folk music from DenTV. Series apparently ran only from October 21, 1998 to January 13, 1999, but archive is still available.

Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) WebRadio Sites

Site Comments
*Radio nan Gaidheal Gaelic page of BBC Scotland. Now live full-time! Click "Eist" under Radio nan Gaidheal. There are also archives of various programs strewn about. Note especially daily news in both audio and text form under "Naidheachdan". "Letters to Gaelic Learners" in Gaelic under "Foghlam" (the last few in both PDF and audio form -- click "Eist" for audio).

*Scottish Internet Radio "Let's Try a Little Gaidhlig" is a series of 20 half-hour Gaidhlig lessons, updated weekly. Well done. Scroll down on the main page to find the archive.
*Aiseirigh nan Gàidheal "The Awakening Gaels" is a series of 10 one-hour radio broadcasts (the 2001 Highlands and Islands Summer Series) from the Gaelic community in Nova Scotia. Mostly traditional Gàidhlig music, but with spoken Gàidhlig, stories and lessons. Part of a continuing series (now 6 years old).
*Fios. This is the North Lewis weekly newspaper, published every Friday with news of the Outer Hebrides. All issues have some articles in Gàidhlig, some in English. Issue 18 contains bi-lingual material. As a concept demonstration, issues 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26 have both bi-lingual articles and oral readings of the Gàidhlig. They're looking for further funding to do this for future issues. When you get to the website, click on the large blue "Fios" you'll see there, pick the desired issue, and look for articles with the headphones symbol.

About Streaming Media Players

Player Name and Description Go Get It

Unless indicated otherwise, all broadcasts listed on this page use the standard RealPlayer streaming audio/video player. This is an excellent, free, no-hassle streaming multimedia player that can be used as a browser plug-in or as a stand-alone player. Even sites with specialized players (e.g., Spinner.com) are typically using the RealAudio standard now. Click on the button at right to obtain the player.

The Microsoft Windows Media Player doesn't cover all the platforms, but is used by some streaming media sources listed here. They're explicitly indicated.

*Time Zone Corrections

Times are now expressed in 24-hour Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Thus, Friday 0h00-2h00 is Friday from midnight to 2:00 AM at Greenwich. For me, in the US Mountain Time Zone (GMT-7), this program would be heard on Thursday evening from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Errors are possible, as are schedule changes I haven't caught yet. You should check the schedule at the broadcast site to verify the time if you're planning to listen to a scheduled program.

About This Webpage

I often listen to Celtic music while working. Since I live in the United States, I don't find as much Celtic music available on broadcast stations as I would like. And though my collection of CDs is pleasant and growing, it can't expose me to new artists and songs I've never heard before. WebRadio is the perfect answer for my needs, and I'm interested enough that I thought I would make an effort to maintain an information resource in this rather specialized area.

I'm also a student of Scottish Gaelic, and the recent advent of WebRadio news broadcasts in several of the Celtic languages is an exciting addition.

If you are aware of information that should be added or changed here, please let me know.
