The Balza Families -- From Belgium to the Door Peninsula

This page is still under construction

For a variety of reasons, I've found it particularly interesting to explore the Balza family. Our own Balza's (the family of Jean-Baptiste Balza and his son Leopold Joseph Balza) came from Orbais, in Brabant Province. As you can see in the map on the right, Brabant is the area south of Brussels, more or less in the center of Belgium.

Using the microfilmed civil registry of Orbais, I've now traced these Balza back four generations from where I started (Leopold). The earliest Balzas in Orbais appear to be the family of Pierre Joseph Balza and Marie Elisabeth Latour, who came from neighboring Thorembais-Saint-Trond. I also have their parents' names there. I'll be looking there soon.

I'll be writing more here as time permits...

Researchers Interested in Belgian Balza Immigrants to the Door Peninsula
There are a number of immigrant Balza ancestors involved here, who may or may not have been related. Several of the towns in Brabant Province from which these different Balzas came are actually quite close together. I suspect that one or another of us will eventually figure it all out.

Balza Birth Records in Orbais, Brabant Province, Belgium

In the course of researching our Balza ancestors, I've been looking at records in the civil registry of Orbais, Brabant Province, Belgium. I've found a number of Balza's there, and am still looking. Although I don't yet know how many of these Balza's will turn out to be related, I'm betting it will be quite a few. In any case, I wanted to make these records available, in case they're of interest to others.

As an example, here's the birth certificate of our ancestor, Leopold Joseph Balza, born in Orbais

Translation of Birth Certificate Into English
The year 1833, the fifteenth of the month of November, at eleven o'clock in the morning, before us Auguste Guiotte, Mayor, officer of the civl registry of the town of Orbais, province of Brabant, has appeared Balzat, Jean Baptiste, aged twenty-seven years, profession of day-laborer, residing in this town, who has presented to us an infant of the masculine sex, born at his home, the fourteenth of the present month, at six o'clock in the evening, to the declarer and to Catherine Josephe Privot, his spouse, and to whom he has declared that he wishes to give the first name(s) Leopold Joseph.
I had a lengthy table here of Balza's I've discovered in Orbais. However, I've now linked almost all of them into our Balza line, so you'll now find the information in the main family tree.
